A locally-made kiwi icon will now be stationed outside Whangarei District Council, as part of a grassroots response to the amount of pottery streaming into New Zealand from overseas.
The Northland National Potters Week Exhibition has been quietly running at the Native Bush Court next to Forum North for 13 years.
It celebrates pottery crafted in the Northland region, with this year's winner Kristin Kay saying her focus was on creating a creature rarely seen but easily recognised. Her work, Tuatara, was chosen by councillors Phil Halse and Cherry Hermon and will be bought for the public for between $100 and $1200.
Curator Susie Rogers said this year's exhibition, which featured 18 works, faced challenges in that the largest community kiln in town at the Quarry Arts Centre was recently decommissioned.
The exhibition is on until tomorrow at Forum North.
