The pohutukawa towering over Laurie Hall Park is now on full show after a number of surrounding trees were given the chop.
Arborists worked yesterday and Thursday to remove the trees in preparation for the district's Anzac Day commemorations, marking the 100th anniversary of New Zealand and Australian forces landing at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915, in World War I.
The Laurie Hall Park memorial includes the city's Cenotaph, which has been relocated from Rose St and will be unveiled on March 28.
"As part of the war-memorial project the three evergreen trees above the Cenotaph have been removed to reveal the grand pohutukawa behind them, letting in more light, opening the upper area up for security, providing a viewing area for visitors at the Anzac Day ceremony and a grassed area for people to use year round," a Whangarei District Council spokeswoman said.
"Some trees have also been removed from within the bush to the left of the waterfall for health and safety reasons."
