A police car was rammed and a high-speed chase abandoned due to the way a stolen vehicle was being driven in the mid-north, police say.
Road spikes and a second police pursuit eventually stopped the car near Kaikohe on Saturday evening, where the four or five occupants scarpered. Officers and a dog unit caught three teenagers, police said.
The vehicle, with four or five occupants, had sped off when a patrol tried to pull it over at Pakaraka at 7.40pm on Saturday.
The police pulled out of the chase because of the way the fleeing car was being driven.
A patrol tried to stop the vehicle in Settlers Way, Okaihau, some time later. The driver of the stolen vehicle allegedly rammed the police car and raced off toward Kaikohe, with road spikes laid out as the car approached Kaikohe.
