A Plucky 61-year-old from Northland is returning to the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series for a fourth time, to continue to show the world that physical disabilities can't stop her from taking the plunge.

Russell's Margot Forrest is taking part in the Bay of Islands Classic tomorrow, the first of six events in the nationwide ocean swim series.

An occupational therapist who knows more than most about the capabilities and strength of the human body, Margot spends her working hours encouraging those with permanent and temporary disabilities to set and achieve realistic goals to get their lives back on track.

However, seven years ago, when faced with the unexpected amputation of her leg, she decided to make the tough choice to walk the talk and set an example that her patients can follow.

Margot said "swimming is a fantastic sport for all ages, sizes and abilities.

"I almost forget that I'm missing my leg when I'm swimming.

Ever the optimist, Margot shows no sign of losing her spirited resilience, as her goal for this event is to encourage her friends to join her and grow their own confidence.

She's an impressive character, said a greatly moved Scott Rice, the series event director.

"Margot is a real inspiration. She's living proof of the benefits of swimming."

Margot will be participating in the 3.3km I'm Going Long distance.

Other distances include the 200m OceanKids event and 300m Give it a Go event.

The other five events include the Harbour Crossing (Auckland), Capital Classic (Wellington), La Grande (Akaroa), Sand to Surf (Mt Maunganui) and King of the Bays (North Shore, Auckland).
