Whangarei's Tom Robinson (pictured) was the top-performing Northland surfer at the Backdoor GromBash.
The event was held at Manu Bay in Raglan over the weekend and also featured Manu Scott-Arrieta, from Sandy Bay.
Robinson, the current national Under-14 boys' champion, placed third in the U14 Boys' Division of the event won by Kora Cooper, from Raglan. Another Raglan local, Josef Jungwirth, was runner- up in the event. Robinson's third placing, against two surfers who surf Manu Bay daily, has put him into the U14's number one-ranking position with one event remaining for the season. Manu Scott-Arrieta placed seventh in the Under-20 Boys Division and still holds hope of qualifying for the New Zealand Junior Surfing Team heading to the Azores Islands at the end of the year to compete at the World Junior Championships.
