Brace for super-chilled weather this week as a southeasterly blasts through Northland, with the east coast particularly vulnerable.
Weather Watch's Philip Duncan said the wild weather tomorrow and Thursday could bring isolated hail and thunderstorms. Day temperatures in Whangarei on those days would be 10C-11C. Overnight it would be 5C-6C, he said.
"The east coast is more vulnerable to the southerlies and you'll find Wednesday and Thursday extremely cold and temperatures will struggle to go above 12 and 13 degrees," Mr Duncan said.
"It's the wind that will have a bit of a bite to it. With winds coming from the Gisborne ranges, Whangarei will be super-chilled.
"This will be one of the times Whangarei will get winter winds coming through the Southern Ocean straight on to Whangarei without hitting the land."
The cold snap may be short-lived, with a high expected to cover the region on Friday.
