Firefighters with chainsaws spent more than two hours cutting up the burning tree to make sure no part of it was left smouldering.
The shelterbelt tree blaze was an example of the increasing fire risk as Northland basks in brilliant summer sunshine.
Ruawai chief fire officer Kevin Evans said his brigade spent about three hours putting out a pampas grass burnoff that got out of control late on Thursday.
A passerby reported seeing smoke in the Gallie Rd, State Highway 12, area at Matakohe about 9.45pm.
"Where there's smoke there's flames," Mr Evans said, adding that Kaipara had an open fire season at present and the fire risk was rising in the hot, dry weather.
The Kerikeri brigade went to Doves Bay at 11.09pm on Thursday to deal with what chief fire officer Les Wasson said was a house light fitting "smoking up a bit".
"The householder had turned off the power and called the brigade. We advised them to get an electrician." He said firefighters were relieved there was no damage and regarded the late-night call as a normal part of their duties.
The Hikurangi brigade secured an accident scene after a car left Vinegar Hill Rd at Kauri and hit a pole at 9.10am on Thursday.
Chief fire officer Snow Buckton said the driver was seen in an ambulance, but the Advocate was unable to obtain further details.
The Te Kopuru brigade answered a medical assistance callout at 8.03pm on Thursday after an Aratapu woman, 80, had a heart attack, but it is understood she died. Similarly, the Kaitaia brigade was called to assist at 7.43am yesterday when a man in his 60s suffered chest pains, but he also died.
