A Whangarei hairdresser is confident his trendy style has what it takes to win an international competition.

Daniel Marteni, a professional stylist at Villa Hairdressing on Bank St, is nervously waiting for the International Goldwell Colour Competition winner to be announced in Sydney in July.

The 22-year-old is competing against 75 finalists from around the world - including four from Auckland - in the competition and is confident he has what it takes to win the top prize.

"Becoming a finalist in New Zealand is pretty overwhelming itself," Mr Marteni said.

"When I found out, I started screaming and knocking products off the shelf.

"I've got a good feeling. I don't want to be cocky but I've got a good feeling about the photo I've used."

To secure a place in the competition's finals, Goldwell released a 'trend' to all the competitors, who had to interpret that trend into their own look to please the judges.

The winner of the Sydney Colour Zoom competition will then go to Las Vegas and aim to re-create the look of their photo entry. The competitor will be given four hours to complete the same look on their model and potentially win a bigger title as part of Goldwell's creative art team.
