Nixon St will be closed until December as Whangarei District Council completes a project aiming to improve traffic flow and eliminate accident hotspots.
But the council says it has learned lessons from an earlier closure that saw a number of accidents in the area, with some caused by motorists' frustration.
Project manager Mark Seakins said that over three months from Sunday works would include kerb and footpath installation, regrading driveway entrances, installation of signs, and construction of the asphalt road pavement. Nixon St will be closed at both ends to prevent through traffic but will be open to residents. Graham St will be closed at the Mill Rd end and open only to residents at the Kamo Rd end.
Mr Seakins said last summer's Nixon St closure had held lessons on safety.
Mair St and Parahaki St were again being used as detours for Hatea Dr traffic, and Deveron St for traffic to and from Kamo Rd. Stage 2, to commence next year, would include upgrading the Kamo Rd/ Kensington Ave/ Nixon St intersection and completion of four-laning of Nixon St.
