Rain and strong westerly winds are expected across Northland for most of this week.
The MetService said an active front was responsible for heavy rain and strong to gale northwesterlies expected today and tomorrow before a cold showery southwest flow spreads over New Zealand, with some brief snow possible for the mountain passes.
Rain and cloudy days have driven temperatures up, with Whangarei recording 17.5C around midday yesterday.
MetService weather forecaster Rebekah LaBar said a series of fronts moving towards New Zealand would bring more showers in parts of the country including Northland. She said rain should ease off on Thursday and Friday as a result of a ridge of high pressure.
Saturday should be a cloudy day and showers would return on Sunday but it would not be quite as wet as this week, she said.
