The second largest tapestry ever created in New Zealand has been unveiled in Whangarei.
The 4.1m by 3.3m artwork was given to Whangarei city by those who made it, and in recent weeks a ceremony took place to celebrate with an unveiling at Forum North.
It took volunteers three years and thousands of hours of work to complete the huge piece of work titled Whangarei Our Place, which began from an initiative driven by Jackie Addenbrooke.
A group of weavers from the Whangarei Creative Fibre group did most of the weaving and, over the course of the years, thousands of locals and visitors weaved their own little "piece of history" into the huge work.
The completion and hanging of the tapestry was "absolutely wonderful", said Community Tapestry committee member Jill Ruddell.
