Secret Santa police squad makes Noah's day

A little boy has been left chuffed by a random act of kindness from two police officers who donned their secret Santa hats for him.

Four-year-old Noah MacDonald, accompanied by dad Adam MacDonald, was riding his scooter along the Riverside Dr portion of the Onerahi cycleway last Sunday, when the pair waved to a passing police car.

Half an hour later the police, a male officer and a female officer, returned and struck up a conversation with the MacDonalds.

Mum Kelsie MacDonald said the police praised Noah for wearing a helmet.

"Then they went and grabbed a new scooter from the car and said 'Santa told us to buy you a new one'," Mrs MacDonald said.

Good luck getting 4-year-old Noah MacDonald off his new scooter, a gift from two passing "Secret Santa" police officers.

Noah loved his old scooter but it was a couple of years old and getting a bit "haggard and rickety", his mum said.

"He was so chuffed with the new scooter and didn't get off it all day," Mrs MacDonald said.

As the police drove away they put the sirens on for Noah, rounding off "a pretty spectacular experience for a 4-year-old", Mrs MacDonald said.

Whangarei Kaipara acting area commander Inspector Al Symonds said the officers wanted to remain anonymous.

"The identity of the secret Santas is still a secret," he said. "All I can say is that they would not have done what they did to get into the news. We have a lot of good people in the police and we are proud of all the work they do."

Mrs MacDonald said she wanted to publicise the incident as police were often criticised, but did a lot of good work.
