A 17-year-old schoolgirl has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after she was hit on a pedestrian crossing outside Kerikeri High School.
The incident has prompted police to remind motorists to be extra careful as children around Northland start heading back to school.
The accident occurred about 10am yesterday as the teen was crossing Hone Heke Rd.
Senior Constable Felicity Beckett, of Kerikeri police, said the girl, a student at the high school, started crossing when a car heading towards Cobham Rd stopped. A car heading the other direction, however, failed to stop and hit her. The impact broke the windscreen and threw her into the stationary car, leaving her with head injuries.
Her condition was described as serious when she was taken by St John Ambulance to Whangarei Hospital.
