Work has started on replacing a bridge across Rust Ave with Whangarei District Council urging motorists to show some patience while that part of the road is closed to traffic for almost two months.
Whangarei District Council contractors yesterday started dismantling the two-span bridge - built in 1927 - while a new bridge is built to help ease flooding issues in the road and downtown area.
While signs at both ends of the street warn that the bridge will be closed, yesterday a number of motorists still drove up to the bridge, only to be told they had to turn around. This caused a bit of consternation for a few and the council is urging people to show some patience while the work progresses. While that part of the road is closed to traffic for the work, pedestrians will be able to use a temporary footbridge downstream from the existing bridge.
