The annual Whangarei Station Relay, which starts at the Whangarei Police Station, was held on Friday. This year it was renamed the '2014 Clubs Memorial Run' in memory of Detective Sergeant Andrew Clubley who died in May. Funds raised from the run are being donated to the Sea Cadet Corps.
Teams from police, fire service, Whangarei District Council, the Crown and Madhatters Football Club entered the run around the city. There were a number of walkers as well.
Mr Clubley, 49, died after suffering serious head and neck injuries in a fall from a bike on the BMX track at Pohe Island. The death stunned many who worked with Mr Clubley, known to colleagues as "Clubs". Mr Clubley had been in the police for 29 years, 24 of those in Whangarei. The father of three had been heading the child protection squad but had also led investigations for the Criminal Investigation Branch.
