WBHS showed early on that this was going to be a very physical encounter and they weren't going to allow Westlake any easy points.
WBHS threw everything at Westlake in the first 20 minutes but were unable to cross the line, Westlake proving to have a very strong defensive line.
The game was kept very tight with both forward packs hammering away at each other all game, neither giving an inch.
Westlake were first to score near the end of the first half with a converted try.
They were able to gain great field position from a penalty and were good enough to get over the line from the subsequent lineout.
WBHS were not to be outdone in the first half with Jayden Leaupepe kicking a massive penalty goal from halfway, leaving the half-time score at 7-3 to Westlake.
The second half was equally bruising.
WBHS were first to score with another Leaupepe penalty, taking the score to 7-6.
It looked like WBHS were starting to take control of the match, however Westlake were able to score two more tries with some strong carries from their forwards, as the WBHS team started to tire after a very heavy workload. WBHS lost a player to the sin bin for 10 minutes and Westlake were able to manufacture their final try while WBHS were down to 14 men.
The final score was 22-6 to Westlake, however WBHS can hold their heads high and take some strong self-belief into the final stages of the second round of the North Harbour 1A first XV competition.
WBHS remain firmly entrenched in fourth position on the competition table.
Their next game is against Takapuna Grammar School in Whangarei on July 23.
