"We need to keep winning and keep performing. I don't know how many points you need to make a semi, so we need to keep collecting them."
What really impressed Witcombe and the team was the support they received while in Dunedin, saying there was a loud support crew at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
Witcombe estimated about 60-odd Northlanders had been following the team around, much to their delight.
"We've had phenomenal support, it's outstanding. The support goes a long way to the team's performance, the boys mentioned it after the game that they could hear it.
"Just a big thank you has to go to them for coming down really."
Wednesday's win - their first since 2011 - also meant Northland have won more games this season than they did in 10 games last year, and have scored more competition points.
While proud to have overtaken last year's season total, Witcombe was quick to turn focus away from that and on to tomorrow's 4.35pm match against Southland.
Helping boost the short turn-around was the lack of injuries, with Witcombe saying the only concerns were a few bruises.
"The next few days will be light, a bit of analysis and a pool session, pretty much just look after their bodies.
"They're prepared and positive [about the short turnaround], we haven't mentioned the turnaround once.
"There are no excuses in this group, it is what it is and every team goes through it."
The Taniwha team for tomorrow's game has not yet been released but will be in tomorrow's Advocate.
