Resolute defence was the catalyst for a convincing bonus-point win for Old Boys' Marist (OBM) in the Bayleys Southern Districts' Premier rugby competition.

OBM, missing nine frontline players, were well disciplined in their 32-15 home victory over an error-riddled Hora Hora.

OBM first-five Peter Breen was a stand-out running the cutter, but had a start to forget when he put the opening kick off out on the full.

Despite the mishap, OBM took control early on with great set piece work from the forwards.

Hora Hora struggled to control the ball under tight defensive pressure, particularly from the OBM loose forward trio.

Hora Hora struck first blood, however, when halfback David McDonald made a break and found No8 James Corlton with an offload to send him over for a try.

OBM didn't take long to respond as Hora Hora's ill-discipline let them down inside their own 22, giving Breen an easy penalty kick.

A knock-on and a penalty from Hora Hora gifted OBM good position, and they made them pay.

Lock Paul Leyland busted through would-be tacklers for a 30m run right into Hora Hora territory.

Quick ball wide resulted in an unconverted try in the right hand corner for centre Bram Egli.

Hora Hora's scrum was under the pump, leading to more ball for OBM.

Strong running from the midfield combination of Graham Peter and Egli lead to a wide ball to flanker Aorangi Stokes, who waltzed through the gap untouched, scoring under the posts.

Hora Hora continued to battle due to the tough defence of OBM, continually losing ball through the set piece.

Of particular concern was their lineout, which was unable to secure quality ball.

Despite this, their scrambling defence kept OBM scoreless for the rest of the half.

OBM started the second half with frenetic pace, forcing more mistakes from a Hora Hora side devoid of inspiration.

OBM camped on the Hora Hora line early with multiple lineouts inside the 22.

And when Hora Hora got the chance to get off their own line, their clearing kick missed touch.

This proved costly as OBM halfback Matt Marwick glided through untouched.

Imposing number8 Taniela Manu then showed some ball-playing flair to send Stokes through for his second try of the afternoon, giving OBM the bonus point for scoring four tries.

Tempers soon flared and a scuffle sent OBM prop Howard Sililoto to the sin bin after connecting with a punch.

Hora Hora were unable to capitalise on their number advantage, continuing to turn the ball over through a combination of handling errors, set piece mistakes and ill-discipline in the rucks.

OBM scored immediately after Sililoto came back when Manu showed more attacking nous by sending a cut-out ball to winger Alex Goodwin for their fifth try.

Hora Hora then scored a consolation try right before the final whistle.

Second five Lyric Brownlee made the initial break which resulted in a cut out ball to put winger Adolfo Pogret in the corner.

OBM coach Greg Shipton said it was a resilient effort.

"We have worked hard on our defence. We were disappointed with our effort two weeks ago," he said. "With nine players out, it shows that we have great depth here."
