Rugby: Kamo come from behind to retain unbeaten run

Kamo had to fight to maintain their unbeaten 2018 season while Western Sharks grabbed a rare victory in the latest round of Bayleys Premier rugby action.

Down at halftime, Kamo mounted a comeback at home to beat Hora Hora 31-27 in a top of the table thriller.

The game lived up to its pre-match billing as Hora Hora sensed an opportunity to knock over the competition frontrunners.

Hora Hora came out firing and through a physical opening 40 minutes, they held a slender 15-10 lead.

The game continued to be an enthralling tussle throughout a fast-paced second half as Kamo showed complete reluctance to let their unbeaten streak slip through their fingers.

The halves combination of captain Mac Sykes and first five Myles Thoroughgood, who was selected for the Northland Vikings during the week, stood tall in the second half and led Kamo home - just.

Hora Hora can feel unlucky they didn't pick up the result but they could leave Kamo Recreation Ground knowing they have the ability to beat the top side in the competition.

Meanwhile Old Boys Marist moved within one point of the top two with a commanding victory over Hikurangi.

OBM grabbed the 68-10 win at home in possibly their most clinical display of the year, consolidating their spot firmly inside the top four.

Elsewhere Mid Northern slipped further back in the top four race after the Western Sharks produced a defensive masterclass in their 10-0 win.

A strong set piece and a desperate passion on the defensive end was the Sharks' trademark as Mid Northern couldn't find a way over the line, try as they might.

Kerikeri and Waipu were busy in an intriguing battle in the Bay of Islands in the meantime.

Both sides are firmly in the battle for top four placing and nothing could separate the two sides, ending the match squared at 22-all.

With the wind at their backs Kerikeri couldn't clinch the result, missing a last-minute penalty from out wide.

In the final match of the round, Wellsford produced a strong attacking display to keep their hopes of a semi-final appearance alive.

Their 33-7 bonus point win over Otamatea moved them up the ladder while simultaneously holding their opposition to the foot of the ladder.
