A 74-year-old Whangarei man is recovering in hospital after a motorcycle crash left him with serious limb injuries.
Police say the accident occurred about 2pm on Sunday when the bike rear-ended a car on Puketona Rd, near Paihia. The car had stopped and was waiting to turn right into Kaipatiki Rd.
The rider suffered serious leg and arm injuries and was airlifted to hospital by the Northland Rescue Helicopter. There were initial concerns he could lose a leg.
Police, St John and two crews from the Paihia Fire Brigade attended. Firefighters assisted the medics, carried out traffic control, and prepared a helicopter landing area at Paihia School.
The police Serious Crash Unit was notified.
