Rider in emergency care after hitting back of car

A motorcyclist was seriously injured following a Northland crash which saw him ram into the back of another vehicle.

Senior Constable Russell Rawiri said the collision happened at the junction of State Highway 1 and Jordan Valley Rd, just north of Whangarei, about 2.15pm yesterday.

Mr Rawiri said it appeared the motorcyclist was heading south on SH1 and was overtaking a vehicle then went into the back of a car that was turning right into Jordan Valley Rd. Mr Rawiri said the 23-year-old motorcyclist was transported to Whangarei Hospital by ambulance.

The crash blocked the southbound lane of SH1 for about 30 minutes.

Mr Rawiri said alcohol and speed had been ruled out as factors. As of yesterday the man was still in emergency care.
