A poor start to their chase - at one stage they were 26 for 6 - proved catastrophic for Onerahi Central as they lost to City in Northland Premier Grade Cricket on Saturday.
The 50-overs a side match at Kensington Stadium saw Onerahi put City in to bat on K1, and the Onerahi bowlers prevented the City batsmen from putting together any substantial partnerships to make a very chasable 167.
But Onerahi's own poor batting show in the early overs of their chase proved crucial.
RESULTS:
Premier:
Onerahi Central played City on K1 and after winning the toss, inserted City. Matt Lobb (19) and Callum Gegg (23) added 48 for the first wicket before Sean Doel removed both openers in quick succession. Craig Elliott then played smartly for a well compiled 44 off 80 deliveries. City, however, didn't form any substantial partnerships through the middle and lower order and the side was dismissed for 167 in the 48th over. Wickets were shared with Will Potter (3-39) being the most successful.
In reply OCCC were in serious trouble and were at one stage 26 for 6 before Gabe Field (27), Tom Herman (40) and Sean Doel (29) added some respectability to the total. OCCC were eventually all out in the 39th over for 126. Jason Smith (4-21) and Pradeep Kumar (3-19) were the pick of the City bowlers.
WBHS played against Maungakaramea on K2 and after a good win last week, against City, WBHS were keen to keep momentum. Batting first, the WBHS side played intelligent cricket and scored 227 for 7 in their 50 overs. Sam Sweeney, again, was in good form and scored 82. He was well supported by Richard Stobart (41) and Sam Webb (29). The best of the Maungakaramea bowlers was Sean West, with 2 for 24.
Maungakaramea started relatively well and were 92 for 1 in the 24th over with Tom Lovegrove and Nathan Condon playing well. Lovegrove, however, was dismissed for 48 and Nathan Condon followed soon after for 44, and Maungakaramea were in need of a solid partnership. This never eventuated for the competition leaders and the WBHS side strangled the Maungakaramea middle and lower order. Sam Webb (4-42) and Michael Krige (2-32) were the best of the WBHS bowlers and Maungakaramea were dismissed for 209 in the 48th over.
Kaipara Flats played Kamo at Kamo in the final match of the round. Batting first, Kaipara Flats were under immense pressure from a good Kamo bowling unit. The Kaipara Flats team were in disarray at 94 for 8 before Reece Jones (35 not out) and Liam Wewege (24) added an invaluable 54 for the 9th wicket. David Armitt was the pick of the Kamo bowlers with 4-38 and Sean Daniels (3-41) supported him well.
Kaipara Flats needed to be very disciplined if they were to defend their total of 151 and they started well with Kamo losing Lucky Singh in the second over. From that point, Kamo couldn't form any substantial partnerships and they struggled to cope with the consistent Kaipara Flats attack. Wickets fell at regular intervals and the home side was bundled out for 89 in the 29th over. Wickets were shared around but Josh Cunis, who took 3 for 7 off 8 overs, and Matt Taylor (3-12) were the pick.
