A Whangarei man is facing court after allegedly being caught drink-driving twice within the space of a few hours, the second time after police say he was speeding at 130km/h.
Whangarei police acting Sergeant Geoff Bigwood said officers pulled a car over on Tarewa Rd about 4.45pm on Thursday and gave the driver a breath test.
Mr Bigwood said the test came back showing the man, aged 33, allegedly had a level of 623micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.
The legal limit for motorists aged 20 and above is 400mcg of alcohol per litre of breath.
The man was taken to Whangarei police station, charged with driving with excess breath alcohol and forbidden to drive for 24 hours.
However, Mr Bigwood said, about an hour later police stopped a car after they clocked it travelling at 138km/h on State Highway One at Ruakaka.
The car was pulled over and it was the same man who had been released just an hour earlier, he said. The man was again given a breath test, which again, Mr Bigwood said, was allegedly over the legal alcohol limit.
The man would appear in Whangarei District Court later this month charged with two counts of driving with excess breath alcohol and one of driving while forbidden.
The man also had his car impounded for allegedly driving while forbidden.
