Points scored decides tied teams

In the run into play-offs, it's not often teams will be tied on points, tied on points differential and draw their match, but that's what happened to Tikipunga and Kamo High School.

In the NorthTec Adam Blair Trophy, Kamo needed to win their round-five match against Bay of Islands College by at least six to make it through to the semifinals - which start tomorrow. They won by six, which put them in a confusingly tied-up position with Tikipunga.

As a result of the deadlock, it meant the teams were tied on points differential, meaning whoever won between the two teams in round robin would be looked at - but it was a draw.

So, what happens next? In a cruel blow to Tikipunga, points scored were the deciding factor - of which Kamo had 138 to Tikipunga's 134.

The result means that Tikipunga miss out on being involved in the main draw, instead playing off for the second tier Northern Swords Shield.

However, Kamo will be happy to be in the main draw and travelling to Whangaroa College for their semi.

In the other semi for the main draw, Whangarei Boys' High School host defending champions Kaitaia College after finishing comfortably on top.

Boys' High really have been the form team of the secondary school competition, sitting undefeated after five games and having scored a whopping 216 points while conceding only 26.

With Tikipunga, who are playing in their first season of the Adam Blair Trophy, in the Northern Swords Trophy draw, they now host Northland College. Meanwhile, on the other side of the draw, Okaihau host Bay of Islands College.

In the ninth and 10th play-off, Dargaville High play the "Brothers" team - a combination of players from Te Rangi Aniwaniwa, Abundant Life and Taipa Area School - in Taipa.

Finals are next Friday night.
