One of Roy King's goals was to be still be mowing his own lawns at 100.
Not only is the Kamo centenarian still pushing his four-stroke Masport around his backyard, but he's gardening, hanging out washing, and going for the occasional walk up Mt Parihaka.
The former Mangawhai dairy farmer and professional runner enjoyed his 100th birthday on Sunday in a helicopter, viewing his old farms and favourite fishing and hunting spots from the skies. A father of nine, grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of 25, Roy said his secret to his long life has been plenty of exercise.
"I've kept training and exercising - walking in the last few years. I'll walk from home to the top of Parihaka and back occasionally, but it takes me a whole day."
He also was a keen bowler for 57 years, but has had to slow down a bit after having a hip replacement a few months ago - his first major surgery. But he keeps his mind sharp doing crosswords and quickly reciting the alphabet backwards to test his memory. Roy lost his wife Alice eight years ago, aged 88. His remaining four children - two daughters and two sons - live from Central Otago to Whangarei Heads.
