Three performers from Northland will be making their way from Auckland to small-town Panguru to give back to their home community.
The journey is part of a Maori Television documentary titled Queens of Aroha by Mika Haka Studios. It will follow three city slickers well-known in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community who go back to their home town - tiny Panguru, in the Far North.
Mika Haka Studios executive assistant Lance Loughlin said the three stars - Ramon Te Wake, who is a male to female transgender woman, Jay Tewake, who is gay, and Maihi Makiha, who is a drag queen - wanted to give back to the community.
"A common theme in Maoridom is a lot of family members grow up in the community and then move on and travel away and don't come home. These three were adamant they wanted to return to Panguru, embrace that message, and give back," Mr Loughlin said.
