It wasn't hard for Whangarei hairstylist Daniel Matene to decide to support the teen cancer charity Canteen as a way of celebrating his first anniversary in business.

He and his team raised $1500 for Canteen on Friday by offering "the works" for $50.
Visitors to his salon, Dan BLK Creative, on
the corner of Walton and Robert Streets, could order any or all of the treats from a list that included blow waves, hair treatments, facials, make-overs and hand scrubs, with complimentary sparkling wine, other beverages and nibbles, accompanied by live music from a duo.

The vibe was as positive as the end result.

"This is the anniversary of my first year here and part of my business plan is giving back to the community," Mr Matene said. "I like the philosophy behind Canteen. We all know or have heard of young people who have benefited from what they do."

Some people just came in to give a donation without staying for the pampering. Mr Matene believed that reflected the regard in which Canteen was held.

"This feels like the best way for me to celebrate this milestone. I'm thinking of holding a similar event annually now," he said.

Mr Matene, who is 24 years old, was an award-winning hairstylist before he opened his beauty and fashion salon.

The team includes an apprentice as well as himself and two contractors providing photography, hair, fashion and make-up services.
