Those who can't make the main event need not miss out on Waitangi Day festivities, with a free celebration planned for Whangarei.
The Whanau Fun Day will feature face painting, games, hangi, international food, performance and live music at Onerahi's Sherwood Park on February 6, with organiser Robyn Blumsky inviting families to bring a picnic blanket and join the fun.
Local five-piece band Feedback would play covers including Kiwi reggae from Katchafire and Fat Freddys Drop, followed by old school hits from Elvis, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. "They play a wide range of genre and songs for everyone. You won't be disappointed," Ms Blumsky said.
Onerahi Volunteer fire service would also be there on the day and has told children to "be prepared to go home wet".
The event, organised by Onerahi Resource Centre and Ngati Hine Health Trust, with support from Whangarei District Council, includes a number of craft stalls and a regular Saturday market would be on in the nearby hall. Hangi can be pre-ordered by phoning or texting Raniera on 021 083 5622. The $10 hangi was "the works" - pork, chicken, pumpkin, potato, kumara, cabbage and stuffing. Orders will be accepted until February 5.
