Police have advised car owners to secure their vehicles in lock-up garages if possible following the break-in of nearly a dozen cars in a Whangarei suburb. One car was driven away and a GPS and glovebox were stolen from another vehicle in Onerahi on Wednesday last week.
Constable Kim Adamson said nine cars had rear quarter windows broken and attempts were made to drive away another three, including a Nissan Avenir that was taken from Beach Rd.
Three vehicles were targeted on George Point Rd, two on Montgomery Ave, and others on Bella Close, West View Crescent, Sorrento St, Bloomfield Pl, and Old Onerahi Rd. Ms Adamson said nothing useful, apart from a few coins, was taken from most of the cars broken into.
"All the cars that were broken into were secure so what more can you do? They can be safely locked away in a garage but not everyone has that facility." She said most of the victims may struggle to fork out for repairs. It was likely the same person or persons were involved in all the break-ins, she said.
