Parts of Northland shivered through their coldest day of the year yesterday, and while heavy rain, hail and thunder could hit today, it's unlikely to be as cold over the next week or so.
MetService meteorologist Peter Little said Kaikohe got down to 1.7C overnight Wednesday/yesterday, while Whangarei recorded a low of 3.1C and the Bay of Islands 3.4C, all the coldest official temperatures of the year so far for the centres.

The MetService's official temperatures are recorded in louvred boxes and the mercury is likely to have fallen lower, particularly inland.
Mr Little said the storm sweeping up the country was responsible for the low temperatures, but the mercury is unlikely to be as low again in Northland for the next week or so at least.
