To celebrate 100 years of rugby in the region, the Northland Rugby Union has launched the Teams of the Century auction, immortalising the province’s greatest players through limited-edition framed jerseys.
Featuring legends like Sid Going, Cheryl Waaka, Portia Woodman and Ian Jones, the campaign celebrates a century of rugby excellence while raising funds to secure the future of the sport in the region.
Fifteen iconic men’s and 15 women’s framed jerseys are being auctioned on galabid.com, with current bids ranging from $500 to as high as $11,000. The auction opened last month and closes this weekend.

Each framed jersey will feature a special centenary emblem, marking 100 years of the Northland Rugby Union. The jerseys will include the player’s number, along with a plaque commemorating their contribution to Northland’s rich rugby history.

The men’s Team of the Century includes rugby greats such as Warren Johnston, Northland’s all-time record points-scorer with 1656 points. Another icon is Sid Going, the legendary All Blacks halfback and Northland coach, whose contribution to the province earned him an MBE. Ian Jones, an All Blacks centurion and one of the finest locks in rugby history, also features prominently in the team, cementing his legacy in Northland rugby.
On the women’s side, the Team of the Century boasts the likes of Portia Woodman, Olympic gold medallist and star of the Black Ferns, whose impact on the game is internationally renowned. Krystal Murray, a formidable presence in the front row and a pivotal player for both the Black Ferns and Northland, also takes her place in this distinguished team.
Also in the list is Cheryl Waaka, a legendary Black Fern and someone who has given so much to Northland rugby over the years, contributing to the strength and pride of Northland women’s rugby.

Waaka, who is now a Northland Rugby Union employee, said she is honoured to be featured.
“Thinking about it, it’s taken a journey, like with everybody. It’s a bit surreal to be honest.”
She added that coming from a rural area and being a role model to younger girls was among her highlights. “To get 100 years is special and to see who has gone before, after and during and to be able to see what’s coming in the next hundred years is special.”

Waaka has made an indelible mark in rugby, having represented New Zealand internationally and being part of the team that won the 1998 and 2002 Rugby World Cups.
In 2005, she became the first woman in Northland to coach a senior men’s team.
Rugby legend Brian Going gave advice to players coming up the ranks.
“In the Northland Rugby Union, there are many opportunities, just like in other regions ... surround yourself with positive people that know what they are talking about.
“Don’t expect everything. Nothing is free and you have to work yourself hard. Set your goal and be around good people. Remember your family and good luck.”
The campaign has been generously supported by Stan Semenoff at Semenoff Group who has given so much to rugby in Northland over the years.
Northland Rugby Union CEO Cameron Bell shared the excitement around the auction: “This is more than just a celebration of our rugby heritage; it’s a chance for us to honour the incredible players who have defined North Auckland and Northland Rugby over the past 100 years. These jerseys are a symbol of the passion and pride that our players have shown on and off the field, and the auction is a way for us to share that legacy with our community.
