Northland Police have appealed to the public for any video footage or photos of an abandoned pursuit earlier today to help them find the driver.

"The chase went through Western Hills Drive, Rust Ave, the CBD, then onto Hatea Drive where we decided the safety of the public was more important than continuing," police posted on Facebook.

Police found the stolen car shortly afterwards, but the driver was long gone.

"We have a good lead on who the driver was, but would love to know if anyone who saw the chase took any photos or video footage," the post said.

A number of people commented on the Northland Police post saying they had seen the chase. One said "the guy in the stolen vehicle went round the corner nearly sideways".
