Shooting still probed
The police investigation into a shooting involving Black Power and Nomad gang members in Kamo last week continues. Five people were injured in the Clark Rd shooting and police have arrested a 21-year-old man, who was one of five admitted to hospital after the shooting. Detective Senior Sergeant Dene Begbie yesterday said three people remained in Whangarei Hospital in a stable condition, including the arrested man. He said police would continue to maintain a strong presence in the Kamo area and at Whangarei Hospital while investigations continued.
Fire scare at pool
Swimmers had to be evacuated from the Whangarei Aquatic Centre after a fire was discovered in an electric fan on a wall. Firefighters called to the pool on Ewing Rd about 8.20am yesterday used a portable carbon dioxide fire extinguisher and a high-pressure hose reel to put the fire out. Firefighters were at the scene for about an hour. About 20 swimmers were evacuated before being allowed back in.
