Charges follow dispute
A man had been arrested after he allegedly fired a shotgun when a man walking down the street hit a car, police say. Senior Sergeant John Fagan said police were called to Great North Rd about 9.45pm on Wednesday after reports a firearm had been discharged. He said a 25-year-old had left an address after an alleged domestic incident and was walking down the street when he hit a car. A 22-year-old man at a nearby house walked out on to the deck and allegedly fired a shotgun. The two men, who had no links, were arrested. The 22-year-old has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, presenting a firearm, possessing cannabis and resists arrest. The 25-year-old has been charged with breach of bail, trespass and assault with intent to injure.
Doctors' strike
The 73-hour strike by Resident Doctors' Association members that saw junior doctors strike at Whangarei Hospital was to end at 8am today. Northland District Health Board said there were no real problems at the hospital caused by the strike, although some people did have elective surgery cancelled. That could end up costing the district health board up to $1.5 million for missing elective surgery targets.
