A Lotto ticket sold in Northland was among thirteen nationally that won $24,210 in Lotto Second Division on Saturday night. The lucky ticket was sold at Countdown Tikipunga. Police seek fleeing driver
Police are still looking for a driver who fled a checkpoint on Kerikeri's Heritage Bypass, then crashed through a road sign and ran away after crashing in the middle of the roundabout on Waipapa Rd. The incident occurred about 9.35am on Saturday. His car has been seized. Meanwhile, two youths aged 14 and 16 from the Kaikohe area have been referred to police Youth Aid after admitting breaking in to 11 cars in central Kerikeri in one night last week. The break-ins occurred on Thursday night in the area between Lanark Rd and Fairway Drive.
Hokianga woman hurt in crash
A Hokianga woman is recovering in hospital after a crash left her with serious back and facial injuries, including a broken jaw and eye socket. The 30-year-old's vehicle left the road at Pakanae, near Opononi, and crashed into a bank at 2.45pm on Friday. She was initially taken to Rawene Hospital by St John Ambulance, then airlifted to Whangarei Hospital by the Northland Rescue Helicopter. An investigation into the cause is continuing.
Man seeks judge-alone trial
A man accused of navigating a vessel in the Whangarei Harbour above the speed limit has elected a judge-alone trial. Kim Feickert is facing one charge of failing to ensure unnecessary danger and another of navigating a vessel above 5 knots at Whangarei Harbour at Marsden. The charges were laid by the Northland Regional Council. Feickert, 53, is due back in the Whangarei District Court on November 25.
Warning on children, matches
A Northland fire chief is urging parents to keep matches out of children's reach after a close call in Kawakawa. Firefighters were called out at 10.45am on Sunday after a pre-school boy playing with matches set fire to a bed. However, fire chief Wayne Martin said the boy ran to his parents and told them. The home was also fitted with working smoke alarms which further alerted the family. The bed was damaged but there was no damage to the home thanks to the early warning.
