Police are still looking for a man suspected of stabbing another man at Kaikohe's Mobil fuel station on Saturday evening.
Reports of a stabbing were made to police around 4:45pm. A witness told the New Zealand Herald that "there was an argument and a scuffle and someone got stabbed".
The victim, who was in a stable condition with reasonably serious injuries, was taken by ambulance, first to Bay of Islands hospital in Kawakawa, before being taken south to Whangārei Hospital.
Northland Police acting senior sergeant Pat Waters said while the offender had not yet been found, police were following good lines of inquiry as to his whereabouts.
With police, fire and ambulance staff responding, she was trapped in the vehicle and had to be cut out before being airlifted by helicopter to Auckland Hospital.
Northland Police acting senior sergeant Shane Turner said the woman may not have survived the immediate crash had the member of the public not stopped and notified emergency services. He confirmed that at 4:30pm yesterday, the woman was still in surgery in a critical condition.

The trip to Parirau Marae, Matakohe, on Saturday, September 5, has been postponed until further notice. The associated trip to Waitangi Treaty Grounds scheduled for August 15 has been postponed until further notice.
Belly Dance Fusion Classes have been cancelled from August 21 until we progress to level 1.

Doll-making day
Oromahoe Kindergarten will host a doll-making workshop on Saturday, August 29 with tutor Nina Hamill, an Auckland weaver and artisan who specialises in Steiner-inspired play equipment and materials that support learning for children.
The workshop and doll-making day would not be a fundraiser but a chance to learn to handcraft toys.
Participants will have the option of making rabbit or cat dolls, or a larger doll, and will take them home at the end of the day.
The workshop will start at 10am, and participants will be asked to take a plate for a shared lunch.
Food fest is all go
The Bay of Islands' boutique food and wine festival will rack up its 11th year on October 3, and according to the organisers It! just keeps getting better.
"This is It! The event not to be missed. Love it! Drink it! Bite it! Sing it! A successful recipe of fantastic food, wine, entertainment and friendly locals all mixed up together," they say.
