Boundaries redrawn
Northern Regional Council (NRC) constituency boundaries will be finetuned to even out the population in each. At yesterday's meeting the green light was given to move the Coastal South constituency boundary south to match Whangarei District Council's Mangakahia/Maungatapere boundary. Maungatapere, Kokopu and Whatatiri areas will now be in the neighbouring Coastal North ward. The most northerly Te Hiku ward boundary will shift so communities around Mangonui Harbour are in the same constituency. The NRC made the decision after its required six-yearly review. Having Maori constituencies was ruled out last year under a separate legally required revision. A month-long appeal period on the boundary changes is now in place if original submitters wish to respond.
School's TREEmendous effort
Hukerenui School is a finalist in the TREEmendous challenge. The challenge asked students around the country to design new outdoor learning spaces to go in the draw to win a $10,000 TREEmendous outdoor classroom. TREEmendous is an initiative which challenges schools to consider how they can transform unused areas by planting native trees and encouraging students to explore, learn in and reconnect with nature. The four winning schools will be announced in November. For more information about TREEmendous visit http://treemendous.org.nz.
