Farmhouse brewery wins
Kerikeri's Kainui Brew Co has won a gold medal for its Rank and File Porter in the 2018 New World Beer and Cider Awards. Kainui won the gold medal in the Stout, Porter and Black Beer category and was the only Northland brewery to win gold, with no breweries form the region declared champions in any of the 12 categories. Judges said: The American (or hoppy) Porter is delightfully balanced. It offers milk chocolate and coffee notes on the palate that give way to a pine and cut grass hop character that integrates perfectly to create a long, silky smooth flavour slide from sweet to gently bitter, with no detours or sharp edges interfering with the journey.
Parua crafts, food show
The Parua Bay Arts, Craft & Food show is back again on Queen's Birthday Monday, for the 13th year. Jodie Hannam, of Northland Events, was asked by the local school to "take it on" to ensure that it stays in the community after it grew too big for the school and local kidergarten. Hannam has helped run the event four times, although she admits to "being a bit nervous to be doing it on her own without all the help of wonderful parent volunteers we've had in previous years".
Parua Bay Arts, Craft & Food Show is on June 4 from 9-3pm at Parua Bay Community Centre, with over 100 stalls of unique handmade products & foods and plenty of family fun and entertainment.
