The bearer of one of Northland's most splendid beards is hopeful he can win a place on the podium at the New Zealand Beard and Moustache Competition in Auckland tonight.
Whangarei man Mark Rowlands' luscious tawny chin tresses taper into a pair of dreadlocks, a unique look which he hopes will give him the edge against more than 100 competitors - "with my specific style I could potentially do well".
"I do a bit of grooming. There's quite extensive conditioning then a specific beard oil, and a wax that I shape my moustache with," he said.
Last year Mr Rowlands - who has been growing his facial hair for three years - placed 5th in the beard section and 9th in the moustache category, though changes to the judging criteria means he will only compete in the former category this year.
"Another year's growth has provided a bit more girth and length," he said, though quickly adds it's not all about size.
