Ngai Takoto have given their negotiators a green light to complete the tribe's settlement of Treaty of Waitangi grievances.
Ngai Takoto has about 1500 eligible voters and during the past six weeks 755 of them in New Zealand, Australia and other parts of the world participated in a poll which found 83.26 per cent agreeing to accept the settlement and 77.73 per cent supporting Te Runanga o Ngai Takoto as the governance entity to manage settlement assets.
The overall voting return percentage was 50.13 per cent, which Ngai Takoto lead negotiator Rangitane Marsden said was one of the highest recorded in the settlement processes to date.
The settlement will return substantial forestry and farming properties to the tribe, plus land at Kaitaia Airport, Kaimaumau and the Te Rangianiwaniwa kura.
It will bring statutory recognition and name changes to cultural sites, a co-management agreement with the Department of Conservation and a social development accord with the Government and some departments.
