Lotto winners
Twenty-six Lotto players, including two from Northland, celebrated after each winning $25,726 with Lotto second division on Saturday.
The winning Northland tickets were sold at Kaikohe Four Square and Ngunguru Food Mart. The $38m jackpot was not struck on Saturday night and Lotto NZ bosses say the increased prize money must now go in Wednesday's draw. If no single ticket wins Powerball first division the prize pool rolls down to the next highest division with winners. Saturday's winning number were 03, 11, 16, 24, 38,40 and bonus 35.
Forestry fire
Fire crews were battling a blaze in a forestry block on Rawene Rd late yesterday. Rawene and Kaikohe volunteers were alerted to the fire just after 4pm. A helicopter was also called to assess exactly how big the fire was and if it was threatening any properties. There was also a fire in a pile of logs on the site.
Excess breath-alcohol
An Onerahi man will have to make alternative travel arrangements for his appearance in Whangarei Court after he was stopped and was well in excess of the legal alcohol limit. He was breath-tested after being stopped on Maunu Rd about 2.30pm on Saturday and recorded a breath alcohol level of 937 micrograms per litre of breath. The limit for drivers 20 and over is 250mg. An 18-year-old driver was stopped on SH1 near Awanui on Sunday about 1.20am and blew 716mcg.
