Rawene's waterfront musical loo has passed its use-by date and will be replaced with a fresh new facility.
The 20-year-old, two-cubicle public toilet on Russell Esplanade, which used to self-clean and play music, has reached a point where annual maintenance and repair costs make it unviable.
State-of-the-art when installed in the late 1990s, the convenience is now sad and tired and the music adjunct no longer works. The Rawene toilets long outlasted a similar facility at Kaeo installed about the same time.
Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board chairman John Schollum says a replacement option will be discussed with the local community at a public meeting at Rawene Town Hall on February 10 at 5pm. A budget of about $60,000 has been set aside for a new toilet.
