Netball: Marist nail first win but schoolgirls push them

Marist 2 have scored their first win in the preliminary round of this season's premier reserve netball.

However, the Whangarei Girls' High School 10-1 team secured a bonus point in finishing within five goals of Marist 2 in the week-four clash.

WGHS 10-1 started strongly, led by three at the end of the first quarter and strengthened their advantage at halftime by a further goal.

But Marist 2 had a great third quarter to take the lead by one goal and in the final quarter increased it to four. The final score was 41-37.

For Marist 2, Sirelle Thompson at goal keep, partnering Germaine Gibson at goal defence and Catherine Ryan at wing defence, was outstanding.

Jessie Musgrove at goal attack had a great game, combining well with Rebecca Simper at goal shoot.

For WGHS 10-1, Uma Robinson at goal defence worked hard and secured some good ball. O'Shea MacMillan put good pressure on the ball and Kelena Roughan at centre fed the shooters well.

Hora Hora 1 continued their winning streak by downing the collegiate Wahine Toa Whero team.

Hora Hora made a great start and led by nine after the first quarter. In the next two quarters they increased their lead, though Wahine Toa Whero won the final quarter by two goals.

The final score was 58-44 to Hora Hora.

For Hora Hora 1, Angela Wiki at goal keep played a great game and combined well with Hayley Taylor at goal defence. Marita Walters at goal attack and Rachel Pilcher at goal shoot were solid in the shooting circle.

For Wahine Toa Whero, Nancy Shortland was a workhorse at goal defence.

The shooting combination of Kahu Kura Hau-Peita and Sharleece Ross Hill was strong but simple mistakes lost the game for the young team.

Manawanui Development also had a win. They led Fideliter 2 by four goals at the end of the first quarter and by three-quarter time were 22 ahead.

Fideliter 2 did win the final quarter, by a goal. The final score was 45-24.

For Manawanui Development, Irihaapeti Te Whata at goal keep and Kapua Otene-Harris impressed, turning over a lot of ball.

For Fideliter 2, Kayla Tattley at goal keep and wing defence managed to grab good turnover ball. Katelyn Gunson at goal shoot and Tiletha Everitt at goal attack combined well.
