COMMENT

I am a huge fan of doing something new and exploring new places, in fact discovering a new destination is one of my absolute favourite things to do. I am always amazed at how a change of scenery can truly reinvigorate you.

With my passion for travel, it's no wonder I chose to work in the tourism industry, and am lucky enough to have a job where I get to spend my days telling others how great Tai Tokerau Northland is and why they need to visit.

Since joining the regional tourism organisation a year ago, I have learnt so much about Northland that I didn't know before.

The region has close to 1000 accommodation and food service businesses alone, not including the other attractions, activities, and tour operators!

It's easy to understand why 30 per cent of all visitors in the region are actually from Northland.

Why would we spend time and money going somewhere else, when we can have an unforgettable holiday right here. Perhaps we're afraid that if we don't travel outside the region for our holiday, it won't feel like we're on holiday?

I've got some handy tips for how to make a staycation in Northland feel like you've gone someplace new.

Firstly, make use of those in the know, and take a tour. When travelling abroad we don't think twice about paying extra for a guided tour but for some reason we don't give it the same value back home.

We have some incredible storytellers here in the North. They will entertain you with interesting tales and transport you back in time. With such a rich and varied history here in Northland, I guarantee that you will learn something new and walk away with a greater understanding and appreciation for our region.

Secondly, immerse yourself in the culture in the same way you would overseas. We are so lucky to have a beautiful, rich culture here in Aotearoa and in Tai Tokerau there is no shortage of ways that you can feel connected to it.

Is Northland's image on the rise?

There are so many incredible Māori cultural experiences in Northland and they all have distinctive qualities and a unique history passed down to them from their ancient ancestors.

Visit the museums and galleries around the region. You may not think Northland has an art scene but indeed it does. From street art trails to sculpture parks, studios to international art exhibitions if you're interested in art, you can fill in many a weekend appreciating different displays.

And for the history buffs, Northland is home to some fascinating museums. Discover the history of Northland and New Zealand through contemporary exhibitions and multi-sensory experiences.

Creative Northland releases an annual Art Guide as well as a Heritage Guide which showcase the wonderful galleries, museums and creative experiences Northland has to offer.

Test your tastebuds with new flavours. Northland is home to some of New Zealand's best producers, so if you're not a market regular, seek out local produce and artisan products. You'll feel like you're in the south of France as you stroll through local farmer's markets and pick up freshly baked breads, award-winning cheeses and flavour-packed fruit and veg.

Or, if you prefer something already prepared, head to one of the many local eateries that hero Northland produce.

A good holiday should always include a little pampering, but you don't need to head out of town to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Bathe in the healing, geothermal waters at recently re-developed Ngawha Springs.

Visit one of the day spas throughout the region that offer treatments that will have you feeling brand new. Or enjoy a lap of luxury, since Northland is home to some of New Zealand's most spectacular luxury lodges. Treat yourself to a night away, enjoying breath-taking views while being waited on.

Finally, shop for real souvenirs that will provide memorable keepsakes of your experiences. Northland is home to an unfair share of talented artisans. Many of them open their studios to visitors, have stalls at local markets or have items on display at galleries.

Purchase a piece to brighten up your home without having to worry about finding space in your suitcase.

So next time you are in the mood to go someplace new but don't have the time or budget to take a trip, I encourage you to holiday at home and discover all the incredible things there are to do in our backyard.

Not only will you not have to sit in traffic or spend hours getting to your destination, but when your family and friends next come to visit you'll be able to wow them with your local knowledge and take them to the best spots in town. Head to northlandnz.com/visit for more travel inspiration.
