Whoever coined the phrase "every dog will have its day" may have had the Mutley Dog Show in mind.
Organised by the Bay of Islands SPCA at Kerikeri Domain on Saturday, prizes in the show were awarded not for pedigree, but for quirkier qualities such as waggiest tail, best trick and shaggiest coat.
Dog owners' creativity was also put to the test in the hotly contested best fancy dress, which saw dogs disguised as everything from martial arts star Bruce Lee to ladybirds and a bride and groom.
Bay of Islands SPCA secretary Janine Taylor said 150 pets took part in the show, up on last year's 136.
The aim - apart from celebrating dogs with a fun family day - was to raise money for an animal shelter in the Bay of Islands. The SPCA currently relied on kennels and volunteers offering up their back yards.
Four SPCA dogs had found new homes on the day, including Stomper, who had been up for adoption for the past six months.
Mrs Taylor said the show was a fitting way to launch this week's national appeal.
The gruelling task of judging went to chef Neil Brazier and vet Keren Fraser, while lawyer Rick Palmer was the MC.
