A Northland man told police he thought he had run his partner over but did not stop the car as he was scared her father would kill him.
Viliami Fungavaka told Detective Sergeant Mark Dalziel in a formal interview that the lights of his Holden Commodore were not on when he ran over something on Pukepoto Rd in Kaitaia, on the night of August 20, 2013. That "something" was his partner Georgina Manuel.
A recording of his police interview, conducted by Mr Dalziel at Whangarei police station, was played to the jury in the High Court at Whangarei yesterday.
Fungavaka, 47, is accused of running over his partner and mother of two Ms Manuel, with his car during a roadside argument in Kaitaia. He has denied a charge of murder, saying what happened to Ms Manuel was an accident.
Fungavaka handed himself in at Whangarei police station.
