Whangarei MP Shane Reti is in Japan for the 70th commemoration of the atomic bomb drop on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, which was followed three days later by a bomb on Nagasaki.
Dr Reti will join other nations in remembrance of the devastating effects of nuclear weapons, and maintaining the call for disarmament.
A fluent Japanese speaker, he has invitations to meet the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and will speak at several functions.
"New Zealand is well-known for its leadership on nuclear disarmament. We will continue to work with other countries in pursuit of a world free of nuclear weapons," Dr Reti said.
He is the executive secretary of the New Zealand Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament group and earlier this year attended the five-yearly review of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) at the United Nations in New York.
