The man who died while snorkelling at Kai Iwi Lakes on Christmas Day was Hanbo Bao (known as Campbell), aged 44, from Albany, in Auckland, police say.
Bao was found unresponsive in the water at Kai Iwi Lakes, near Dargaville, about 2pm on Christmas Day. The death has been referred to the coroner.
It was the second water death in Northland on Christmas Day, after a crabber was found dead at Uretiti Beach, south of Whangārei, about 10.10am that day. The crabber's name has yet to be released by police.
The beach, 6km north of Waipū, is unpatrolled and has a grim history of crab fisher deaths.
Police have yet to release the name of the woman who died when a boat flipped at Houhora on Boxing Day.
