A 54-year-old man who according to police threatened to set himself on fire at a Kaitaia address on Sunday afternoon will undergo a psychiatric assessment.
A spokesman said the man was dousing himself with petrol and looking for a lighter when police arrived.
Two officers kept him talking while a third entered the house and apprehended him. The man had been charged with breaching bail.
