Police were called to a Whangarei school after a young man attempted to enter the property and allegedly made threats after he was asked to leave.

Staff and students at Whangarei Girls' High School were alerted to the incident about 2pm yesterday.

Principal Anne Cooper said prefects manning the gate during lunch hour stopped the man from entering the school.

He then allegedly made some comments that were viewed as a threat.

"The prefects are always trained to seek help if there's any trouble," she said.

Ms Cooper said there was no disruption to classes as a result of the incident.

Northland police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said the man allegedly made threats, saying he would return with a firearm.

Police cars were seen along Lupton Ave, Kent Rd and Manse St trying to locate the young man.

He did not return to the school and Ms Kenneth said officers were stood down.

It is believed police later spoke to the man.
